Discovered in 2015, MOTS-c is one of only two known mitochondrial-derived peptides and functions as both a cell-specific regulatory signal and a systemic hormone — earning it the designation "mitokine."
MOTS-c primarily targets skeletal muscle and acts as a metabolic regulator by activating the AMPK pathway, the master switch for cellular energy homeostasis. Under metabolic stress, MOTS-c translocates to the cell nucleus where it interacts with stress-responsive transcription factors including NRF2.
