The peptide concentrates over 1000-fold in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it interacts directly with cardiolipin — a phospholipid essential for the structural integrity and function of the electron transport chain.
SS-31 acts directly on mitochondria by binding to cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane, stabilizing the cristae structure and optimizing electron transport chain efficiency. This interaction enhances ATP synthesis while simultaneously reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production.
